I’m thinking about what else dance can be

As an improviser and interactive choreographer, I respond in dance to the world around me by asking: what are we thinking about during a dance? This line of questioning led to Performa Choreographic Incubator, a community-responsive laboratory for brave movement. Additionally, I teach locally and internationally and co-produce performance festivals. Moving from contemporary dance and circus, devised performance, post-modernism and the punk band I was in, WE ARE BANDITS — I make dances to stay awake to shared presence and support others in carving out their spaces, too.

Live Performance

With ties to Los Angeles and Philadelphia, I make solo and ensemble based dance improvisations. Interactivity is a feature in my current work, focused on the politics of bodies. My creative process, as with my teaching style, values shifts of perspective and shared authorship.

About the Artist

Bio

Adam Kerbel (he/him/el) is a movement artist and choreographer working across choreography, improvisation, and hybrid forms as tools for reflection and connection. With roots in theater, circus, puppetry, and experimental performance, his work has been presented by New York Live Arts, Jacob’s Pillow, The Music Center, Skirball, and Breaking Walls Festival. He established Performa Choreographic, a platform for brave new dance, co-founded Almanac, and produced Cannonball. Kerbel creates spaces attuned to shifting culture.

How I Work

Originally from rural northern Los Angeles County, Kerbel is a collaborative artist hot on the generative potential that happens when artists and communities come together to share skills, cultivate ideas, and build energy together. In addition to making new choreography, Adam uses grassroots methods to amplify the work of artists locally. He served as a Producer and the Interim Director of Communications and Marketing at Cannonball from 2022-2024, programming curator of Fit Fest, was a puppeteer at the award winning Noah’s Ark at the Skirball, and a 35mm film projectionist.

Currently, Performa is in development at the Music Center in LA. In September 2025, Adam will join Trilateral, a 1-year international artist residency that build bridges between artists based in the US, Budapest, and Bulgaria. He will also join the Festival Academy’s Atelier for Young Festival Managers in Amman, Jordan.
