About the Workshop

Performa is an 8-week laboratory where artists create brave new dance and performance works in Philadelphia. Movement makers drop-in weekly to generate individualized, body-based compositions while working simultaneously alongside peers in a large, open air environment. Each weekly session is a chance to develop upon choreographic material or to start fresh.

Join at your pace or as your schedule allows. Online registrants receive pre-workshop materials. For artists who are interested, the workshop concludes with an invitation to share your work-in-progress at Miniball on Saturday, March 30th. (More info below.)

There are no mirrors or music in the room; nor are there dance styles or numbers to “perfect.” Instead, the workshop centers individual curiosities as the primary motivator to study and hone one’s artistic vision and spur progress towards exuberant new performance creations. Tactical support and mentorship are provided by Adam Kerbel, who cultivates ongoing experimentation and skill building among a critically engaged community of peer professionals.

Performa investigates foundational questions about liveness in the art of performance, where information emanates from in a dance, and how we may consider structure as a potent source of meaning in choreography.

Dance and performance artists of all interests are encouraged to attend. Bring water and wear clothing that is comfortable to move in barefoot.

An Invitation

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants are invited to share brief works-in-progress with a live audience at the popular Miniball Festival produced by Cannonball at the FringeArts Theater on Saturday, March 30th at 4pm

More details are announced within class.

How to Arrive

Allow 10-15 minutes extra to arrive. Bike racks are in the parking lot. Free car parking is found on the surrounding streets. The best area is directly behind the building on Hancock Street between Jefferson and Master.

You can enter the building a little early before class to use restrooms, water fountain, and just chill.

Class starts promptly.

Masking Policy

Performa will adhere to local guidelines regarding limiting the spread of Covid-19 as they become updated. Masking is optional but we support those who choose an added layer of protection.

Tolerance

All participants and individuals adjacent to the workshop are trusted to treat one another with kindness and humility. Please respect one's pronouns, creative choices, and shifting needs.

Commitment to Equity

Situated at Lenapehoking, the ancestral homelands of the Lenni Lenape people and culture, Performa celebrates forward-thinking, adventurous artists who take risks, rethink the present, and imagine a better future. Its goal is to provide a safe(r), creative, and productive environment.
